three core principles of emotional regulation

first principle

highs and lows serve a purpose

When you experience a high in life, you to gain clarity about things that light up your life. When you get passionate about something and you can feel a rush of energy, take note of that thing that gives you fuel. Your passion provides clarity for what you truly care about so remember you are more likely to take things further when they are giving you fuel for your journey.

When you experience a low in life it gives you depth and power in your journey. Lows are like hurdles in an obstacle course. When most people see an obstacle course in front of them they think the world is putting things in the way of them and their happiness or success. However, when you realize that the obstacle course is something that will make you stronger and more powerful as a human, you begin turning obstacles into opportunities.

second principle

perspective shapes emotions

The way we see a situation affects how we feel about the situation. Sometimes we can step back from how we feel about a situation and look at the circumstance from multiple perspectives. Sometimes difficult situations are teaching us something. How we see the situation impacts how we feel. How we feel impacts how we see the situation. Many times, how we feel is a matter of perspective.

third principle

feelings come and go like waves

There are times that we feel something so strongly that we either never want it to end (happiness) or we need it to end to move on (depression). The truth about both of those feelings is that they are like waves. They come and go and at some point, they are going to end.

There is a common idea that we, as humans, should be happy all of the time. That idea isn’t true because nothing is happening all of the time. Feelings come and go like waves. So just like happiness, depression will also come and go.

Truly understanding that feelings come and go like waves, gives you the ability to zoom out when you’re lost in one feeling and understand that everything is temporary.
